The Bourne Ultimatum

If you like action movies (and you’ve seen the previous two films in the trilogy), you owe it to yourself to check out this movie. Though it uses a tad bit more shakycam than Supremacy, it was nonstop awesome, and is probably the finest action film of the year. All around, rockin’.

Grade: A (for awesome!)

Valve and id Sitting In a Tree

I admit I was a bit surprised when Valve announced their appearance at QuakeCon 2007 last week to show off the new game they helped develop, entitled Left 4 Dead.

We’re headed to QuakeCon 2007 next week. If you’re one of the 7,000+ lucky attendees, be sure to stop by booth 221 to say hi and play a few rounds of Left 4 Dead. Valve and the Turtle Rock Studios design team will be on hand to answer questions about the game. We’re giving away some cool schwag, too. Next week, we’ll fill you in our visit to the show.

Understandably, QuakeCon has become more of a trade show than just a LAN party, especially with the trimmed-down version of E3 we have to put up with these days. But could it be indicative of a future partnership between the Doom Guy and the One Free Man? This site speculates as much, but we won’t know for sure for a few more days, at least until id gets a bit more talkative about their next gaming engine, “id Tech 5.”

Update: Looks like we called it! Strange that it happened the very same day O_o

TMBG in SLC on 9/21

The news I received this morning about They Might Be Giants coming to Salt Lake City on September 21st was quickly dampened by hearing that 101.9 The End, a local alt-rock station, had bought out the entire show and would be giving out tickets as prizes on the air over the next few weeks. I was looking to buy a ticket or two to the concert, but it looks like I’m either going to get lucky or take a short vacation to Boise, ID to visit my sister and brother-in-law to check out the concert on the 22nd instead.

Speaking of which, their new album, entitled The Else, is out now on CD and it rocks. It took me a few listens to change my mind about it, since I originally didn’t think too much of it, but it is indeed quite awesome. Check it out streaming on their site.

Live Chat With J.K. Rowling

Those who are interested in knowing a few more details about what happens to the main characters in Harry Potter will be pleased to know that Rowling has agreed to field questions from the Internet regarding just about everything to do with the books. The live chat is already over, but the fine folks at The Leaky Cauldron have posted a transcript of the chat for everyone to enjoy. Beware: the Internet does not know how to spell.

Oh, and watch out for spoilers if you haven’t already read the book, as if it wasn’t already obvious.

Movie Reviews: Order of the Phoenix, Transformers

Order of the Phoenix group shotI have a chronic condition where I have to schedule time to go see movies in the theater. I don’t know why this is now the case, but I find it extremely difficult to decide on a whim to go see a movie. I managed to break out of this pattern last week when I decided to go see Transformers, thanks in no small part to the goading of friends and siblings, eagerly referring to it as the coolest movie they’d ever seen. Not to break tradition, however, I also reserved a ticket for the newest cinema installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, in the local IMAX theater. Following are my brief impressions of both films. I’ll do my best to keep it spoiler-free.
