2007 Upgrade Cycle… of DOOM

Well, it looks like the time has come to finally upgrade my desktop machine. It is getting a bit long in the tooth, and with all the games that have either come out in just the past month or are coming out in the next couple months, it looks like it’s about time to bring the ol’ computer up to date.

It’s actually a hefty upgrade, since every single component in the computer will have to be upgraded. I’ll keep my SoundBlaster X-Fi around for good measure, though. Oh, and I won’t be able to afford to upgrade my monitor just yet. Oh, well.

  • Antec P182 case
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0 GHz
  • ASUS P5K3 Deluxe ABit IP35 Pro
  • 2 GB Crucial DDR2-800 RAM
  • 320 GB Seagate Hard Drive
  • DVD-RW
  • Dell 2007WFP

I’m pretty psyched!

In Search of a Wii

Something changed my mind since the launch of the Wii in November, and now I really want one. The only problem is, there are practically none in any stores, so I will have to wait. This is probably a good thing, since I just paid tuition.

Christmastime

Always glad to be done with a semester of school with passing grades, it is time once again to settle in for holiday festivities. For some reason it never feels like Christmas for me until just before the holiday itself. However I was watching the latest episode of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, entitled “The Christmas Show,” which launched me into the mood early.

I also have done next to no Christmas shopping yet, either. Being a poor college student doesn’t help much, but payday is rapidly approaching. I have no clue what to get for anybody, though 🙁

Dentist Visit

I visited the dentist today for the first time in five years. Initially met by me with intense anxiety, it turned out to not be so bad. (No new cavities!) Still, he advised me that dropping in only once every five years is “a mistake” and I already have an appointment set for 2007.

New Sound Card

After being tipped off to an awesome deal on a Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card, I had quite the interesting experience actually installing the thing in my computer. No matter what I tried, I couldn’t get the drivers and helper applications to install completely; it would get about 75% of the way through and either freeze completely or cause one of those magical BSODs that, until now, I had never experienced on this computer.

As it turns out (and they recommend in the documentation), a BIOS update fixed the issue completely. I installed a beta version of the BIOS since that was the newest version available, created sometime in 2005. Updating the BIOS is always something of a trying time, because one gets quite anxious fiddling with the very brains of the machine. Luckily there were no problems updating and things are just as stable as they were before, only now I have an awesome sound card as well.
