Summer School

It is very likely that I will be taking classes this semester in an attempt to get some kind of degree within the next 12 months. Unfortunately, these classes are not at a convenient location. Even more tragically, I need to get out there four times a week. Either I drive or I rely on public transporation.

According to my calculations, it takes 90 minutes to get to school on the bus, whereas it takes just 20 by horseless carriage. Still, having a free pass for the bus > paying more for gas.

Quake 4

I’m way behind on getting caught up with my games. To complicate things, I picked up Quake 4, since the price had dropped to below $30. Sadly my days of preordering are pretty much over, because I didn’t feel justified coughing up full price for a game that has turned out to be pretty much average.

I’m a ways into the game already (since spring semester is pretty much over for me, I have the time to play), and it is pretty good. Visually, it is more impressive than 2004’s Doom 3, and the emphasis is properly placed on the action, just like any worthy Quake successor should do.

The multiplayer is indeed just like Quake 3, but I am happy to report that I narrowly won my first round played online by about two frags. The multiplayer delivers and performs quite well in comparison to Doom‘s 4 player limit.

I’m pretty psyched for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and will be checking out the E3 previews as they happen in May. It looks like it will be an outstanding game.

Updated Analysis: I was pleasantly surprised by Quake 4. A little sloppy at times, but for the most part it is a safe, solid title. It is unfortunate that despite their best efforts, Raven still can’t be considered an AAA developer. I can’t help the feeling that their total lack of innovative multiplayer contributes to this.

The First Real Day of Spring

As I was walking between classes this evening, I smelled freshly-cut grass and flowers. Officially, Spring began a couple weeks ago. But today, for the first time, the thought occured to me that it actually is Spring. Just last week it snowed over a foot.

Weather sucks.

A New Theme

I finally got around to changing the theme for this old blog. This is something I’ve been meaning to do for some time. I wanted to design my own theme, but I don’t really think I’ll be able to find the time for that.

As I was assisting my boss this past week with debugging a WordPress plugin, I noticed how intricate WordPress’ interface is. The extension was not particularly well-written; it output XHTML that did not jive with the W3 validator, which is inexcusable these days. We eventually found a hack that fixed the issue, but after looking at the source for the plugin, I was somewhat disgusted.

State of the Quatschbox

It has been quite some time since I last posted a “State of the Project” explanation about what the latest development on QuatschBox, my pet PHP project, has been. Rather than dwell on the seemingly endless string of new features, I am going to discuss the role of my project in the so-called “webosphere.” It has been a long time since we last saw a new version of the QuatschBox, and while it is going to take some time to get all those flashy new features implemented, the purpose of the project has changed somewhat over the past year. But, the important question is: when will it be done?
